We live in a world today where the line is blurred between those who walk by faith in the Lord and those who use our faith to their own advantage and hurt our testimony and cause others to look at us with disdain. As in every group, there is something that identifies one group from another; that is the characteristics of the group. What are some characteristics of our faith walk that is missing from those who say they are members of the family of faith?
In the family of faith, we fly the flag of love. One dictionary definition defines love as a feeling of strong attraction, affection, emotional attachment or concern for a person, animal, or thing. If we use this definition to evaluate how those who claim to belong to the family of faith, they will fail miserably in the easiest area to qualify; their words and actions show that they have no concern for others. The Apostle Paul tells us: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV).
These verses say a lot and it causes us to examine our own life. The love that Jesus Christ has for nus is not self-seeking; He laid down His life so we can have fellowship with the Father. No one who claims to belong to the family of faith can say they belong if the love of God does not reside in their hearts. Love is so important that Jesus said: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35).
Thought for Today: Be a true disciple and love people.
