As we continue to look at the character of God, we notice that He is kind. Kindness is a lost art in the world today. It has become the norm to treat others with disrespect and a lack of humanity. But God who does not change, is kind.
The dictionary defines kindness as the quality of being generous, helpful, and caring about other people. The definition identifies the problem: people do not care for others. It has become the culture, and we see this lack of caring in families and in our communities. There was a time when the community cared about those who needed help. Now, society blames those who are in need and ascribe to them humiliating labels. When we look at God, we see someone who cares about us. 1 Peter 5:7 AMP says, “casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].” How comforting! When life beats up on us, we know that Jesus cares.
As people of faith, it’s our duty to follow the example Jesus Christ set before us and walk in kindness also. Kindness directed to others is an outgrowth from the love of God in our hearts. Jesus told a parable about the good Samaritan; he cared about someone who was a victim of crime. He needed help but the religious leaders in his community turned their backs on him. Instead, one man from outside his community cared about his wellbeing and used his resources to take care of him. Kindness is helping those who can never repay you for what you did for them. When the opportunity to help someone in need arises, do it! “He who is gracious and lends a hand to the poor lends to the Lord, And the Lord will repay him for his good deed.” (Proverbs 19:17). Let’s change our community with one act of kindness at a time.
Thought for Today: Friend, God rewards kindness.
