When Nehemiah Prayed

Have you ever looked at a situation and think that the situation is hopeless and there is nothing you can do to bring change? Most of us at some time or another have found ourselves in that situation. While our situations are different, the sentiments are the same: there is nothing we can do. I wonder what would happen if we dared to think that we can be instrumental in bringing change.

While Judah was in exile, Nehemiah got some unwelcomed news: “Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.” (Nehemiah 1:3 NLT), This was not what he wanted to hear, and his heart broke for his people living in Judah. He didn’t have political power, so he spent some time with God. He prayed, fasted and mourned before God. He knew that God could do what he couldn’t do. He ended his prayer with a specific request: O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me.” (Verse 11).

God heard Nehemiah’s prayer and granted him favor before the king because Nehemiah was the king’s cupbearer. That meant it was Nehemiah’s responsibility to protect the king from poisoning, so he tasted the king’s drinks first. Because they work closely, the king noticed the difference in Nehemiah and asked what was wrong. Again, Nehemiah prayed before responding to the king and the king gave him time off and supplies to repair the wall. God is not partial, he answered Nehemiah, He will answer you.

Thought for Today: Friend, when trouble comes, pray.
