God Hears the Prayer of the Humble

Is it easy to admit you made a mistake to someone in your family? Sometimes it is and sometimes it might not be. To admit requires humility and sometimes it’s easier to be humble in our comfort zone. But what if you are confronted head on by someone outside of you zone of safety, will it be so easy to admit you have done something that violated God’s law?

Well, the Bible describes David as a man after God’s own heart. (1 Samuel 13:14). Well David was a shepherd working in the field caring for sheep when God sent Samuel to anoint him as the next king. I’m not sure David understood what the activity meant because he returned to the field to care for the sheep. The journey to the throne was not easy because King Sauyl, the current king had other ideas, and he sought to take his life. Eventually, David became king and sat on the throne. One day, while his troops were engaged in battle, David was at home and decided to take a walk on the rooftop. He saw something he shouldn’t see and couldn’t walk away. In an unguarded moment, he took a man’s wife and orchestrated the man’s death.

God sent Nathan to confront the king. Nathan told David a story about a rich man with a large herd who stole a poor farmer’s one ewe lamb. The story angered David, who believed that man deserved to die. Nathan said, “You are that man!’ (2 Samuel 11:7 NLT). David didn’t become angry at Nathan, instead he admitted his guilt. He said, “I have sinned against the Lord.” (Verse 13). He didn’t defend his actions or asked Nathan if he knew that he was the king. He humbled himself before God and his prayer is recorded in Psalm 51.

Thought for Today: Friend, humble yourself before God humbles you.
