Running from Adversity to Destiny

Have you ever found yourself taking on a task because someone else didn’t succeed in their role? Often, it’s unpleasant because people resent your success where they haven’t succeeded. They resent your success and they resent you.

David had a similar experience in his youth. You see, Israel was living in fear because the Philistines had a champion who challenged them every day for forty days to battle. He wanted a two-man battle: a fight to the finish with winner’s community takes all. Everyone, including the king, was afraid, except David. He was willing to fight. He asked. “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and gets rid of Israel’s disgrace? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should challenge the army of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26 GW). David faced Goliath and defeated him and the women celebrated him in the streets. Their songs said that Saul has slain his thousand, but David has slain his ten thousand. Saul became angry and jealous. (1 Samuel 18:6-9) Saul’s jealousy was not a temporary thing; it became his consuming passion. As a result, Saul spent years chasing after David to kill him.

A jealous heart does not take responsibility for their actions. You would think that the king would be relieved that he did not become a slave to the Philistines that he would celebrate David. Unfortunately, people who receive help frequently respond with resentment. Saul is not alone; there are people today who welcome your help but will resent you for it. What do you do? You keep on living and doing what God expects you to do. Never allow the resentment from others to quench who you are. Like David, you will escape your Saul and come into the destiny God has prepared for you.
