The Danger of Pride

In today’s world, values are often inverted, and in some circles, pride is seen as a virtue. John C. Maxwell wrote, “There are two kinds of pride, good and bad. Good pride reflects dignity and self-respect. Bad pride is the deadly sin of superiority, marked by conceit and arrogance.”

1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love is not proud or arrogant. One definition of proud states that it is an arrogant and self-sufficient attitude that elevates one’s own will above God’s. In Luke 18, we see a Pharisee  introduced as one who thought he was better and looked down on others. He took that attitude to the place of prayer and instead of looking at himself before God, he was busy comparing himself to a simple man. “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there.” (Luke 18:11 CEV). He personified John C. Maxwell’s quote on bad pride; he was so busy investigating the tax collector that he forgot to check his life.

The tax collector did not look at anyone else but examined his heart and life and said, “God, have pity on me! I am such a sinner.” (Verse 13). There is no place in the kingdom of God for pride! Instead, we should embrace humility. C.S. Lewis says, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. We can only think of ourselves less if we have God’s love in our heart.
