Greatness! People everywhere strive for it, and we are often hesitant to take on work that seems insignificant. Yet some quietly do small things that make a lasting impact in God’s kingdom, even if their contributions are never fully seen.
Andrew, one of the disciples, was such a person. He clearly had a heart that sought God. Andrew had been following John, but when he heard John speak about Jesus, he left John and began following Jesus. After spending time with Him, Andrew went to find his brother. Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”) (John 1:42 NLT). Later, while Jesus was ministering, He wanted to feed the multitude. The disciples were troubled because they knew how much it would cost to feed such a crowd. Andrew noticed a young boy who could help: “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” (John 6:9). Jesus told the disciples to seat the people, blessed the meal, and the disciples served it. That child’s meal fed more than 5000 men, plus women and children.
In God’s kingdom, greatness is not measured by public recognition. Many people know Peter and the boy with the five loaves and two fish, but Andrew was the one who brought both of them to Jesus. We may not all be like Peter, who preached on the day of Pentecost and saw 3000 people come to faith, but we can all be like Andrew. In basketball, an assist is a valuable part of the game because it helps someone else make the shot. For every Peter, there are many Andrews serving faithfully in the background. Let us work on our assists and help build God’s kingdom for His glory.
