Children are the next generation of leaders, yet they are often overlooked. They notice what adults miss, and their insight can become a life-changing force in the lives of others. While adults may judge people and situations, children often respond simply to the needs they see.
In 2 Kings 5, we meet a young girl who was captured, taken to a foreign land, and made a servant in Naaman’s household. Naaman was a mighty commander of the army, but he had a serious problem: he suffered from leprosy. He lived with public honor but private pain. On the battlefield, he could hide his condition beneath his uniform, but at home, his leprosy was visible. The young girl looked at her master with compassion. Instead of focusing on the injustice of her situation, she focused on the power of God. One day the girl said to her mistress, “I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:3 NLT). Naaman told the king, and the king sent him with a letter to the king of Samaria asking for his healing. When the king of Samaria became afraid, Elisha said, “Why are you so upset? Send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel.” (verse 8).
When Naaman obeyed Elisha’s instructions, he was healed of his leprosy. The true hero of this story was a little girl who understood the power of God. She was not seeking fame, fortune, or even her freedom. She simply saw a need and responded without expecting anything in return, yet the impact of her actions was powerful. Change came into Naaman’s life. He declared, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.” (verse 15). This transformation was possible because one child chose to share her faith in God.
