Anxiety is not a word that brings joy to life. Life’s uncertainties often create anxiety because what we cannot control tends to make us uneasy.
The dictionary defines anxiety as apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated misfortune. We believe that things would not work out the way we would like and we become afraid. You see, anxiety is rooted in fear! But that is not God’s desire for our lives. Philippians 4:6 AMP tells us, “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.” We love to control what happens to us and we lean on our own understanding instead of trusting God. (Proverbs 3:5). The worry we experience can do little to change what is happening around us.
Fear is not God’s desire for our lives. Proverbs 3:6 GNT says, “Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.” This is the key to overcoming fear and anxiety. Jesus asked His followers, “Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?” (Matthew 6:27). When we give our anxiety to God, His promise is peace—not a temporary peace based on human agreements, but a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). We do not have to live in anxiety when God offers us His peace.
