Throughout history, people everywhere have worked in every season of life. Before the Industrial Revolution, most work was done at home. People cared for their flocks and grew their own food. In biblical times, work often centered on tending animals and farming, so the Bible includes many examples of these activities.
After speaking about the thief, Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11 NLT). In those days, a shepherd’s life was demanding and time-consuming. Sheep needed constant care, so the shepherd had to lead them to grazing land and water during the day. At night, he protected them from wild animals. Some shepherds were faithful, while others abandoned the sheep.
People understood that sheep would not rest unless their needs were met. Hungry sheep will not sleep; they must feel safe and comfortable. This means the shepherd must care for them every day. In Psalm 23:2, David said, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures.” David understood how important green pastures were to a sheep’s well-being, and he trusted the Lord to care for him. Jesus is our good Shepherd, and He provides green pastures for us.
