Is Your Desire a Need or a Want?

There is a difference between what we want and what we need. At some point in life, people reflect on if they had an unlimited  source of money, they would acquire this and that. These items on the wish list are wants. In this case, a want is something you would like to have but don’t necessarily need. However, in this moment of time, we have come to the point where in some circles, wealth equals being blessed.

Many times we get into unnecessary trouble because of the things we desire. Samson had a problem just like that. One day when Samson was in Timnah, one of the Philistine women caught his eye. When he returned home, he told his father and mother, “A young Philistine woman in Timnah caught my eye. I want to marry her. Get her for me.” (Judges 14:1-2).  Samson expressed his desire: he wants. And at times we are just like that: we want.  What is it that we want? Can our desires take our eyes off God and the things of God? Does power and money take first place in our lives and God becomes a distant second or even third?

In Psalm 23, David said, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1 NLT).  David introduced another word need. Need talks about  lacking something important for health, survival, or a specific task. Sometimes we confuse need and want. Sometimes we believe we need millions to make us happy, but we know that is not true. Money does not buy happiness. There are countless wealthy individuals who took their lives because they lack something their money could not buy. They lacked the Shepherd in their lives; He is the only one who can satisfy they longing in the soul.

Thought for Today: Friend, Jesus Christ is the Shepherd that will satisfy the longing in your soul.
