At times, we find ourselves waiting for a word—the results of a medical test, a decision after a job interview, news of a child’s birth, or confirmation that a loved one arrived safely. Whatever the reason, we long to hear it.
What happens when no word comes? This was the king of Samaria’s situation: no word from the Lord came through the prophet Elisha. Confident that Elisha’s God would warn him of impending danger, the king saw no need to seek a word from the Lord himself. Sometimes we become complacent when we should be watching and praying. “Later, Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathered his whole army and surrounded and attacked Samaria.” (2 Kings 6:24 NCV). The king was caught off guard; he never saw the enemy coming. Although Samaria was a walled city protected by massive gates, its people were shut in by the enemy because nobody could go in our out.
Soon, the king of Samaria faced a crisis. The city’s resources were dwindling, and because the enemy had surrounded it, there was no way to replenish them. “There was a shortage of food in Samaria. It was so bad that a donkey’s head sold for about two pounds of silver, and half of a pint of dove’s dung sold for about two ounces of silver.” (verse 25). Sometimes we act like the king of Samaria, believing that someone else’s prayers and faith will sustain us through our battles. Friend, living without a word from God is dangerous because it can leave you surrounded by the enemy.
