Reject Excuses: Embrace Accountability

We live in a world where personal responsibility is too often avoided. People neglect the preparation required for an event or activity, then look for someone else to blame when they fail. In doing so, they overlook a hard truth: their choices—and their inaction—helped shape the outcome.

In 2 Kings 6, we encounter a king struggling with this same failure of responsibility. Rather than cultivating his own relationship with God, he depended on Elisha to hear from God on his behalf. When the city was surrounded and the crisis produced devastating consequences, the king did not examine his own leadership—he blamed Elisha. He vowed, “May God strike me and even kill me if I don’t separate Elisha’s head from his shoulders this very day” (2 Kings 6:31 NLT). Sadly, that same spirit of blame is alive and well today.

We have become skilled at reshaping the truth to excuse our inaction. The king never examined his own life or considered what he might have done to prevent the suffering in his community. Instead, he placed the responsibility for protecting the nation on Elisha. Blaming someone else is easy because it allows us to avoid confronting our own choices. Yet we are accountable to God not only for what we do, but also for what we fail to do. Romans 14:12 declares, “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.” In light of that truth, let us examine ourselves honestly, reject excuses, and take responsibility for our actions.
