Don’t Grab the Ark!

In life, we often feel compelled to fix whatever seems wrong. As parents, that instinct is especially strong when our children are young. We cannot bear to hear them cry, so we rush to make things better. Because they cannot yet tell us what is wrong, we work through every possibility until the crying stops.

Sometimes, however, we carry that desire to fix things into situations we should leave alone. When circumstances do not unfold as we think they should, we become frustrated and begin devising plans to set them right. Yet our efforts to fix what God has not asked us to touch can have dangerous consequences. King David decided to move the Ark of God, but instead of having the Kohathites carry it as God had commanded, he placed it on an ox-drawn cart. When the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out and grabbed the Ark, trying to steady it. “Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this. So Uzzah died right there beside the Ark of God” (2 Samuel 6:7 NLT).

As a child, I had difficulty understanding why Uzzah died. Yet the Word of God reveals that David’s disobedience created the circumstances that led Uzzah to sin by touching the Ark. Understanding why this happened should cause us to examine how we respond to the situations around us. Let us not be so anxious to grab the Ark and try to help God; He already has everything under control.

Thought for Today: Friend, curb that desire to grab when God says, “Don’t touch.”
