We teach children to conduct themselves well, show respect for their elders and peers, and do what is right, even when it is not easy.
The apostle Paul offers this same guidance to people of faith. In Galatians 6:10 (NLT), he writes, “Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” What does it mean to “do good”? We often associate goodness with charitable acts, such as feeding the hungry and providing clothing for those in need. While these deeds are important, I believe goodness goes deeper. It also reflects our character—not simply how we act when others are watching, but how we behave when no one is looking. The condition of our hearts shapes our character. Joseph exemplified this integrity by doing what was right even when no one was watching. When Potiphar’s wife tried to cause him to sin, he said: No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.” (Genesis 39:9).
It would have been easy for Joseph to say yes, but his circumstances did not weaken his devotion to God. He knew God desired holiness and refused to let anyone or anything lead him into sin. Living with integrity is honorable, but it often comes at a cost. Joseph was imprisoned because he refused to sin. Yet God delivered him: one day he was in prison, and the next he was in Egypt’s palace. God saw Joseph, knew his heart, and transformed his life in His own time. God will bring change to our lives if, like Joseph, we resolve to live with Christlike character.
