Most of us can recall moments that changed our lives, though each experience is different. When Moses noticed a burning bush, he went to investigate—a simple act that changed his life’s direction. Can you recall a time when your actions changed yours?
While Samuel served as judge, the people asked him for a king like those of other nations. Displeased, Samuel tried to turn them back to God. But the Lord told him: “Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for they are rejecting me, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer.” (1 Samuel 8:7 NLT). Saul became king of Israel. He started well but soon began doing things his own way. Before going to war, Saul and the people waited for Samuel to offer a sacrifice. When Samuel was delayed, Saul took matters into his own hands: “So he demanded, ‘Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!’ And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself.” (1 Samuel 13:9). By doing so, Saul violated God’s ordained order, which reserved the offering of sacrifices for Aaron and his sons from the tribe of Levi.
Samuel was horrified when he arrived and saw what Saul had done. Saul explained, “‘The Philistines are ready to march against us at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the Lord’s help!’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.” (Verse 12). Saul’s actions revealed his lack of reverence for God. He believed that being king entitled him to act as he pleased, but his disobedience had consequences. Samuel told him, “But now your kingdom must end.” Saul’s disobedience cost his family the kingdom—a reminder that disobedience brings unpleasant consequences.
