I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”!” Psalm 91:16 NLT
The average person would love to live to a ripe old age. Medical science has done a lot of research into what people can do to improve the quality of their lives, and live longer enjoying good health. Today, especially with the problems we face in the world, some people have lost hope and so many are experiencing mental and emotional issues. This verse is so encouraging when you consider the uncertainty in our world..
Is that promise of a full live available for everyone? Let’s look at Deuteronomy 5:33. “Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.” This tells us there is a criterion for the long life that comes from God. You have to follow His commands. What does that mean? Well Jesus was asked a similar question in Matthew 22 and this was His response: “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” verses 37-39. When you love the Lord, that love would drive you to follow his commands; this would ensure a successful relationship with God. When you love your neighbor as yourself; it results in living with others in a manner that pleases God.
Now, there are those who choose to live their lives on their own terms; they care little for either God or man. 2 Chronicles 21, tells of a man, Jehoram, who chose to live his way and abandoned the commandments of the Lord. He was so evil that he killed all his brothers and some of the leaders; and led the people to worship idols. In spite of the wickedness of man, God’s word is true. Galatians 6:7 says, ”Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.” Jehoram was not rewarded with long life; instead he became ill and died. No one was sorry when he died and he was not buried in the royal cemetery. God does not reward disobedience.
