Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8 NKJV
There are some words that are overused in our lives; good is one of those words. When children get home from school, parents ask, “How was your day?” The most popular response is, “It was good.” Sometimes good involved an altercation with another student on the playground. Sometimes, the child struggled to understand the math concept taught in school that day. But when they got home, their day was good. As a result, good has lost some of its luster. However, when I say to you that God is good, it brings the word good into a different arena.
The first word in this verse is taste. The word taste means the sensation of flavor perceived in the mouth. To really understand this word, think of a baby when that baby tastes something they like for the very first time. He can’t stop moving his mouth and licking his lips. Sometimes, the item is so tiny you wonder how his taste-buds could perceive any flavor at all; but they did! And so, David is saying, take some time and experience the goodness of God. Think about it carefully; the same way you experiment with the flavor of something new; what can you perceive about His goodness?
When we use the word good to talk about God, then we are saying that God is morally excellent and righteous. Wow! Now that’s what you call, good! Psalm 25:8 NLT says, “The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.” At times, as people of faith, we struggle in doing what is right; but not God. His goodness is manifested when He does what is right. And so, like a good parent, He is able to guide His children along the right way even when they go astray. Psalm 33:5 says, “He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.”
As you reflect on the goodness of God, it causes you to take a good look at your own life. And so you ask, “How am I measuring up?” You have to evaluate your actions and attitudes with a different rubric. In the past, you looked at life through your eyes and your definition of goodness but now you have to evaluate yourself with the yardstick of God’s goodness. You have to accept that you don’t measure up. But there is hope in God. He will not leave you struggling in unrighteousness but will show you the proper path when you go astray. Trust Him to lead you in His goodness.
