Delight in the Lord!

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. Psalm 37:4-5 NLT

Everyone has a desire to succeed in whatever they do although success means different things to different people.  For a small child, success means that that he or she can put on their shoes alone. For an older child, success might mean the ability to go to the community store alone. For an adult, success might mean the ability to purchase a home. Success does not look the same for everyone.

David lived a successful life; he began his working life as a shepherd but retired as a king. With such a difference between his beginning and his end, he must have some thoughts to share about how to live a successful life. These verses gave some insight into his heart.  He told those around him that they should delight in the Lord. Delight means to take great pleasure in someone or something. And just in case you missed it, David repeated that thought again in Psalm 1:2, “But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.” When you do that without fail, God will grant your heart’s desires.

Next, he said, commit everything you do to the Lord. This might not rest well with our modern society that is focused on the power of me. People want to do everything their way.  If you have all the answers and you can tell the future then, this is not for you. But, if you have no idea what tomorrow holds then you need to commit, you need to put all your plans, all your aspirations into the hands of God.  Jeremiah said, “As for me, I am in your hands—do with me as you think best.” (26:14) He knew that God’s plans for him were the best plans for his life.

Then, David concluded with trust. Why is trust in God so important? Well, when you trust, you truly believe that the person whom you trust has the ability to do whatever they say they will do. After you delight and commit then it’s easy to trust. Listen to what David said about those who trust, “They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.” Psalm 112:7.  Bad news will come but when they do, David said, “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

True success comes from God. He knows the beginning and the end. For David, He is the God who gave him success when all the odds were against him.  God used David to slay Goliath and give His people victory. David delighted in the Lord and so God gave him the desires of his heart.

Thought for Today: Friend, take delight in the Lord.

Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
