Strip off the Baggage: Run with Endurance

Air travel has changed over the years. I remember the days when every trip guaranteed the traveler two suitcases. We always traveled with an extra bag. If a suitcase were overweight, we would take out the extra weight and place the items in the bag so that we can comply with the weight requirements.

The walk of faith in  Christ Jesus is no different; living on earth entangle us with weights. Hebrews 12:1 NLT tells us, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” This chapter begins by looking back at the chapter before; Chapter 11 of Hebrews is the Hall of Faith. They were able to do great exploits for God because of their faith. If they able to accomplish these things in their walk with God, it’s possible for us to do the same.

However, we can’t do these exploits with baggage; we need to strip away the baggage. It would be easy if the baggage were physical. But the type of baggage or weights mentioned here requires that first there needs to be acknowledgement that the baggage exists. Many of us carry pride, unforgiveness, and doubt, among other burdens. Next,  there needs to be a desire to get rid of that baggage. Verse 2 encourages us  to keep our eyes on Jesus. Jesus is the perfect example of living on earth and walking with God the Father. This is the only way for us to set our baggage aside so we can run with endurance and accomplish remarkable things for God.

Thought for Today: Friend, leave the baggage and run.
