Jealousy and Envy: Deadly Combination!

As we continue looking at love, 1 Corinthians 13 tells us that love is not jealous or envious. Jealousy is a destructive emotion that the dictionary defines jealousy as a feeling of unhappiness and anger because someone has something or someone that you want.

We don’t have to learn how to desire another’s property or possession. Look at children at play; a child will leave his or her 5 toys for play and will take another child’s only toy. Why do these things happen? The Bible tells us: “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9 NLT). Jealousy is a problem that arises from a sinful heart rooted in selfishness and insecurities. In other words, we care about ourselves and care little for anyone else. We want to hold onto what we have while we desire our neighbor’s possession, the actions of a wicked, sinful heart.

The love of God in the heart makes the difference. “Don’t be jealous or proud but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3 CEV). When we love those around us, we celebrate their success and achievements. “But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.” (James 3:14-15 NLT).

Thought for Today: Friend, let go of jealousy and envy; walk in love.
