Love is patient. We have read this so many times that we see the words and our eyes keep[ on moving. But if we stop to ponder on the word patient, what will we find? The dictionary defines patient as enduring pains or trials calmly or without complaint.
Is that what the Apostle Paul was saying in 1 Corinthians 13? Here patient goes deeper; as people of faith, patient talks about remaining steadfast under trials, continuing to do good, and showing grace to others even when provoked. That is not as easy as it seems because it is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit working on the inside teaching us how to show God’s love. “Love does no wrong to a neighbor [it never hurts anyone]. Therefore [unselfish] love is the fulfillment of the Law.” (Romans 13:10 AMP). Being patient is God’s love in us extended to others. Matthew Henry said, “Love can endure evil, injury, and provocation, without being filled with resentment, indignation, or revenge”
How can we live this out consistently? If we rely on our own strength, we will fail, because this is not about who we are in ourselves but who we are in Christ. Romans 12 speaks of the renewing of the mind. It takes a renewed mind to endure wrong without seeking revenge. While many may see that as weakness, it actually requires character and integrity to hold back. “Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when trouble comes, and pray at all times.” (Romans 12:10 NCV). It takes inner strength to walk in love when provoked.
Thought for Today: Friend, God’s love in us makes the difference.
