Wipe the Record Clean!

Human nature is such that we want to live in the era of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We really want our pound of flesh when we have been wronged. We are not interested in grace, we want justice.

1 Corinthians 13 teaches that love keeps no record of wrongs. How do we reconcile that truth with our desire to get even? Why did the Apostle Paul include this statement in his letter? The Corinthian church was dealing with serious conflict: “Why, the very fact that you have lawsuits with one another is already a defeat. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?” (1 Corinthians 6:7 AMP). Some members were taking one another to civil court because their demand for justice had become more important than their relationships with each other.

This issue highlighted a problem that still exists today; people of faith keep a record when they have been wronged. It’s not comfortable living through painful situations in our faith environments but we are reminded: “This is not a wrestling match against a human opponent. We are wrestling with rulers, authorities, the powers who govern this world of darkness, and spiritual forces that control evil in the heavenly world.” (Ephesians 6:12 GW). This identifies who our enemy is; so, let us walk in love and not keep a record of being wronged.

Thought for Today: Friend, let’s get rid of that record.
