Loving Our Neighbors

In the world today it has become commonplace to explore and invest in activities that are beneficial to you. You will not give assistance to someone in need unless there is a tangible benefit for you.

Sadly, this attitude has also influenced people of faith. 1 Corinthians 13:5 reminds us that love “does not demand its own way”; another translation says love “does not pursue selfish advantage.” What does this mean for believers? Jesus said, “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31 NLT). We are called to love God and to love others as we love ourselves. If we desire what is best for ourselves, we should also desire what is best for others. Yet too often, we still seek our own advantage.

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (Philippians 2:4). We cannot, as people of faith be selfish, that is, concerned excessively or exclusively about what is best for us at the expense of those around us. How can the love of God dwell in our hearts if we exhibit such behavior? Jesus was concerned about the way we interact with each other so he said, “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love and unselfish concern for one another.” (John 13:35 AMP). Let us work and become change agents and demonstrate that love and unselfish concern so the world will want to know our Savior.

Thought for Today: Friend, let’s love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
