Knowing God or Knowing About God

People today claim to know God. Gallup polling shows that 74% to 81% of American adults say they believe in God. However, only 42% believe in what Gallup describes as the “Bible’s God”—the God who hears prayer and actively intervenes in people’s lives.

Why is there such a big gap? Some people truly know God and have an intimate relationship with Him, while others only know about Him. How can we tell the difference? Those who only know about God may talk about the Bible, quote Scripture, and believe their knowledge proves they know Him. In Matthew 22, the religious leaders tried to use Scripture to trap Jesus so they could arrest Him. Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29 NLT). They could quote Scripture, but they did not truly understand it.

Those who only know about God may do good works. There are people hurting and in need of help, and some believe helping them will put them in good standing with God. However, Salvation is not a reward for the good we have done, so none of us can take any credit for it. (Ephesians 2:9 LB). We cannot earn salvation through our work.

Those who know about God live the lives on their own terms; they live how they choose. This is where the identity lies; It tells whether we know God or know about God. Knowing about God manifests itself in a self-directed lifestyle; I will do what pleases me. When we live to please ourselves, we cannot please God. No one who abides in Him [who remains united in fellowship with Him—deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin. No one who habitually sins has seen Him or known Him. (1 John 3:6 AMP). Do you know God or know about God?
