A New Heart

There are many experiences in life that leads us into new experiences. After we came face to face with  the freedom that exists for us in Jesus Christ, many people wonder what comes next. Do we say that was a great experience and return to our former lifestyle or does walking in the freedom of Jesus Christ bring change?

Once you have that experience you cannot go back to life as usual. When we look at Ezekiel 36:26 NLT it says, “And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” This makes it clear that Jesus Christ in our lives brings change. God gives us a new heart. The heart referenced here is not the organ in the body that moves blood around but the heart that is the seat of our emotions.

Why do we need a new heart? Well our old way of life was directed by our former heart.  Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” When God described the human heart he used some words that make us unhappy when they are applied to us. Imagine: the most deceitful of all things! Can anything be worse than that? Then there is desperately wicked; these are not good qualities.

But God in His grace does not leave us in that condition. He wants what’s best for us; He wants to have a new relationship with us. “I will give them hearts that recognize me as the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly.” Jeremiah 24:7.  Only God can give you a new heart. If you are tired of living with a deceitful, wicked heart, look to God. He alone can bring change.
