Sound recognition is important in the language development of children. The experts tell us that babies recognize the sound of their mothers’ voices in the third trimester. So, babies can identify the voice of their mothers incredibly early in life. What happens in the life of a deaf baby when that child cannot hear the voice of the mother?
The inability to recognize the voice of a parent can be a hardship in the life of an infant. But what happens when people cannot recognize the voice of God? In 1 Samuel 3, we find an account of a young boy who didn’t know that God was speaking to him. Samuel was a special child who was given in answer to prayer. His mother made and kept her vow to give him to the Lord. As a result. Samuel lived in the house of the High Priest, Eli. One night, Samuel heard someone calling him, so he went to Eli. Eli said it was not me and sent him back to bed. “God called again, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, “I heard you call. Here I am.” Again Eli said, “Son, I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” (This all happened before Samuel knew God for himself. It was before the revelation of God had been given to him personally.)” (1 Samuel 3:6-7 MSG)
Samuel was unable to recognize the voice of God. When Samuel heard the call again, he went back to Eli. This time Eli realized that God was calling Samuel. “So Eli directed Samuel, “Go back and lie down. If the voice calls again, say, ‘Speak, God. I’m your servant, ready to listen.’” Samuel returned to his bed.” (Verse 9). When God called the fourth time, Samuel responded to him. Samuel grew to become the greatest judge in Israel. If like Samuel, you cannot recognize the voice of God, spend time reading His word and when He calls, you will be able to identify His voice.
Thought for Today: Friend, respond to God’s call.
Have a blessed day and walk in faith and victory.
Teach us to be so connected to you, Lord, so that when you speak, we would recognize and obey.
