Follow Abraham’s Example and Obey God

The call to go to a far-away land can invoke fear and excitement. Excitement because there might be some wonderful new experiences. Fear because you have no idea what the future holds. I can only imagine Abram’s emotions when God said to leave everything behind and go to this far-off land.

We are not told anything about his relationship with God before this encounter, but I would believe that he had some kind of relationship with God. Would you drop everything if a stranger said, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1 NLT). You might shake your head and say that this person has lost his mind. But Abram’s response was different; he packed up his stuff and began his journey with his wife and his nephew. (Verses 4-6). He took God at his word.

I wonder if his family threw him a farewell party. They thought that he was not in his right mind. Who, at the age of 75, takes this wife and moves to a strange land that no one in his community heard about? But Abram prioritized obedience to God above what his family felt or believed. The world defines obedience as compliance. When we are talking about God obedience is so much more; it means, to follow God’s commands, trust his guidance, and submit to his will. That is what Abram set out to do. It is simple but can be difficult especially when we face the unknown. In those times, we simply follow, trust, and submit. When we do, like Abraham discovered, the blessings God promised will blow your mind.

Thought for Today: Friend, walk in obedience to God.
