Do What is Right: Actions Have Consequences!

Children often test boundaries by pushing limits, fully aware that their actions may result in parental discipline; nevertheless, this awareness typically does not deter them. Then there are those adventurous young people who will venture into uncharted waters without fear of consequences. Sometimes, adults behave in the same way.

David behaved just like that when he took Uriah’s wife and killed Uriah with the sword of the enemy; he ventured into uncharted waters forgetting that he served a God who does not condone sin. Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba, bore David a son and all was going well. One day, David had a visitor, Nathan the prophet, who told him a story about a rich man who had an abundance of sheep and cattle and a poor man who had one ewe lamb and the rich man took the poor man’s lamb to feed his guest. David became angry and pronounced death over the rich man. Nathan told David that he was the wicked rich man. (1 Samuel 12:1-7). “Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife.” (Verse 9 NLT). David would suffer the consequences for his sin because Nathan told him that the child would die.

David engaged in fasting and prayer, seeking divine intervention for the child’s survival; however, the child died. Our actions have consequences! David lived under the Law of Moses, and he broke several of the commandments that govern man’s interaction with man. Also, David took the name of the Lord in vain. David’s actions denied that he believed in the righteousness of God. When David asked God for mercy, God denied his request. Our actions have consequences.
