We live in a fast-paced, stress-filled society, and childhood stress is now recognized as a serious health concern. Common stressors for children include academic pressure, too much screen time, financial instability, and less unstructured outdoor play.
When I think about my childhood, I remember wanting to do well in school, but I did not face many of the pressures children face today. If children are carrying this much stress, it is no surprise that adults are also experiencing record levels of anxiety and burnout. What should we do? While society offers many solutions, true help is found in God. Philippians 4:6 CEV says, “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God.” We may be tempted to worry, but we do not have to. When anxiety begins to take hold, the answer is prayer joined with gratitude. It is easy to focus on what we lack, but thankfulness shifts our attention and helps us recognize the blessings in our lives.
When we pray with thankful hearts, “Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.” (Philippians 4:7). If you are experiencing stress, spend time with God in prayer. 1 John 5:14 says, “We are certain God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases him.” Our God is Jehovah Shalom: the Lord is Peace. He is willing and able to bring peace into your life; let Him exchange your stress for His peace.
Thought for Today: Friend, exchange stress for peace.
