Love! It’s a word we like to use to describe how we feel about people with our lips, but our actions tell a different story. Lately, we are seeing domestic abuse that leads to death in family relationships. We discussed attributes of love but how do we live our life of love?
One day, the religious people of the day tried to set a trap for Jesus and asked about the most important commandment. The conclusion was to love God totally and completely and your neighbor as yourself. But the man, wanting to show the importance of his question, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29 NCV). Jesus’ answer told the story about a man traveling to Jericho who was attacked and left to die. A priest then a Levite walked past and left him there. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. (Luke 10:33 NLT). He made a difference in the life of the injured man. Did the priest and the Levite love God? We can’t see into their heart, but we can look at their actions. Our actions give insight into what is in our heart.
We can shout to the world about how deeply we love our God, but it would be meaningless until we learn how to treat our neighbor as ourselves. Anyone of us could be attacked; not every attack is physical. How do we respond when we see someone hurting because of mistreatment? Do we turn our backs like the religious folk who only talk the talk, or do we allow God’s love in our heart to pour oil on the wound and make a difference? I pray that we would love God so deeply that our interactions with others will demonstrate to the world that we are His disciples .
Though for Today: Friend, love your neighbor as yourself.
